A Glimpse into Leslieville’s History

Leslieville was a tiny community that developed around the Toronto Nurseries. Because of this, a large portion of its initial occupants were gardeners. Over time, Leslieville also saw the growth of several other businesses, including tanning, metal processing, and brick-making.

Leslieville eventually became less of an industrial area, and the original factory workers left as well. Following the industrial pollution, the neighbourhood saw an influx of middle-class residents who prioritized creativity.

A range of recently opened eateries started to appear on the streets, and eventually, some of the older buildings were transformed into condos. Leslieville may be a new and emerging area, yet the majority of its residents are still middle-class and working-class.

The Canadian film industry now calls Leslieville home, and on any given day, you can usually see shooting workers huddled together by the side of the road. There are a number of noteworthy condo projects under construction that will increase the population, and new dining establishments are opening up all the time along Queen Street.

With a great deal of beauty and history, Leslieville is a rapidly expanding area spanning from the Riverdale borders to Danforth and The Beaches. Once mostly an industrial centre, this area has developed into a hip place to live for young families who like good food, films, fitness and kind hospitality.

Leslieville is surrounded by East Chinatown, a tiny neighbourhood near the intersection of Broadview and Gerrard that is home to both more modern stores and traditional Asian groceries. Little India, Gerrard's hub for all South Asian markets, cuisines, and textiles, is located in the west end of the neighbourhood. Tucked in between are a plethora of fashionable restaurants and chic pubs that make up Leslieville proper. Visit Gerrard Square Mall for more general essentials, and Carlaw's No Frills is a great place to get inexpensive foods. The population of the neighbourhood is diverse, so even this major grocery shop carries a wide variety of ethnic foods.

Longtime Leslievillians have expressed concern about urbanization. Some of the more established and historic businesses in Leslieville have been replaced by upscale restaurants, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, and sleek condominiums brought about by gentrification. Many other Toronto neighbourhoods have a very similar tale, as the largest city in Canada goes through some growing pains.

Leslieville, with its quaint boutiques, vibrant street art, and historic charm, is not just a neighbourhood; it’s a living canvas. The streets of Leslieville offer a unique blend of old-world charm and contemporary flair, making it a must-visit destination in Toronto.
